Artist Statement:
Technically I use very simple fabrication techniques: welding, torch cutting and grinding. My amazement grows the more I learn about metal and machines and how much physical and monetary effort goes into forming the complex shapes that I find at the junk yard. The longer I make things out of scrap, the more important the scrap is to me. I am driven by a desire for more, better scrap. I collect it all the time; I often travel hundreds of miles to go to a good yard. I currently have a collection of over one hundred thousand pounds (Ten years of accumulation). Everything I collect has to be organized, categorized and arranged. Then I walk around just looking, and letting the materials inspire me. I try to use it well and conservatively. I often find that as I design I have exactly what I need, just the right number of gears or the exact length of chain to solve whatever problem I’m working on. When this happens it makes me feel like I must be doing the right thing.
